Each of these filling materials that are used for Clifton dental fillings has its own benefits and drawbacks. Recommendation on the type of filling material to be used for your Clifton dental fillings will most likely be based on the size and location of the cavity.
If you have a cavity that is on the flat chewing surface of a back molar it is most likely that our dentist will recommend that you get a silver amalgam filling. This is because the silver amalgam fillings are much stronger, and can therefore much better withstand the vigorous chewing forces that are experienced by back teeth. However, if you have a cavity on part of your tooth that shows when you speak or smile, our dentist will probably recommend that you have a tooth-colored composite filling which is much more aesthetically pleasing. While composite fillings are not as strong as amalgam fillings, they do have other benefits. Tooth-colored composite fillings actually bond to the tooth so they do strengthen the tooth. In order to prepare the tooth for this type of filling, generally our dentist will need to remove less tooth enamel then he would with and amalgam filling. However, composite fillings can be more costly since they do take more time to apply. You may want to talk to your insurance company to make sure they cover this type of procedure.
